Austin Powers in Goldmember
Release Date:
July 26, 2002
Mike Myers and Jay Roach have agreed to do another Austin Powers film, subtly subtitled Goldmember. The film gets its name from a new villain played by, so surprisingly, Mike Myers. Apparently, Myers and Roach want to keep the reason that he's called Goldmember a secret. Hmmm, I wonder what Goldmember could mean? Aside from the low-brow obvious, I could see potential for an ad line with MasterCard (just as they did so brilliantly with Austin Powers 2), having Goldmember becoming a MasterCard, errr...Gold member. Of course, Myers and Co. will probably just make a dozen gold penis jokes, which means I will laugh at least a dozen times.
Talks are underway to get almost all of the cast to return, which includes Rob Lowe, Verne Troyer, Seth Green and Robert Wagner. Heather Graham (Felicity Shagwell) may make a cameo, but Austin will have a new shagadelic lady friend in the third installment.
The second film opened to $54.57 million the second weekend of June in 1999. It went on to make $205.4 million domestically, and over $300 million worldwide. The word-of-mouth was solid for The Spy Who Shagged Me, so opening above $54.57 million is almost a given. New Line has set an opening date of July 26, 2002 for Goldmember (same as the Vin Diesel-starrer Triple X). With a blistering ad campaign, clever trailers and a huge fan base, Austin Powers 3 could end up opening above Planet of the Apes' $68.5 million, which also opened the last weekend in July. Unless Jay Roach, Mike Myers, and New Line completely forget how to market the Austin Powers series, this should be a slam-dunk for all involved. (David Parker/BOP)
January 28, 2002 New Line has scrapped the title "Goldmember" due to legal action taken by MGM. The Motion Picture Association of America ruled the title "inadmissible." New Line will appeal the ruling, which came after MGM and United Artists protested over the third Austin Powers installment's title, which was a parody of their James Bond film, Goldfinger. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
April 15, 2002 MGM and New Line negotiated a deal where MGM will allow New Line to use the Goldmember title if they will show the trailer for the next James Bond film, Die Another Day, with the third installment of the Austin Powers films. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
