Sweet Home Alabama
Release Date:

Reese Witherspoon makes her triumphant return to the big screen with this romantic comedy from Touchstone Pictures. She's done fairly well at the box office, but she's never broken that magic $100 million mark. Maybe this'll be the one. Other stars include Patrick Dempsey, Candice Bergen, and Josh Lucas.
Witherspoon plays New York fashion designer Melanie Carmichael. She came from a white-trash background in Alabama, and decided to make a new life for herself in The Big Apple. When her boyfriend (Dempsey), whose mother happens to be the mayor of New York City (Bergen), proposes to her, she needs to run back home to her Southern roots. Not only does she want to tell her parents the good news, she also has to get a divorce from her estranged husband (Lucas). In doing so, she finds that she needs to make a difficult decision and choose between the two men.
Witherspoon's role was originally supposed to be played by either Charlize Theron or Angelina Jolie, but both of them had to drop this film from their schedules. Without seeing the script, it sounds to me like Witherspoon is the perfect woman for this role. She has shown herself very capable of handling a lead role, and this one sounds right for her acting style. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
