Limited release
Billed as a musical comedy/murder mystery, this French import is set in the late '50s. The plot seems fairly simple: the eponymous women are gathered at the country estate of a rich aristocrat for the Christmas holidays. When the aristocrat turns up murdered, the women are naturally all suspects, since all were involved in one way or another with the murdered man. But who is guilty? And will there be more murders before the New Year?
8 Women stars Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle BĂ©art, and several other actresses who are less well-known on these shores, but are probably very popular in France. On paper, this has all the makings of a limited release that would likely see only mediocre business on the art-house circuit. For some inexplicable reason, though, the film is currently scheduled for a wide release sometime in October. Somehow, I don't see a subtitled musical comedy/murder mystery garnering a lot of business at the local cineplex, but maybe USA Films knows more about the market for foreign-language hybrids than I.
At any rate, if you enjoy watching beautiful, talented French women on the big screen, this could well be the movie for you. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
