Described as "much more than a coming of age story", My First Mister deals with two people who could not be more opposite from each other having to deal with the fences they put up around themselves. Leelee Sobieski plays the 17-year-old Jennifer, a girl who isolates herself from the outside world. She is cynical and fearful of the world around her, especially adults. Albert Brooks plays Randall, a character that is seemingly at the other end of the spectrum from Jennifer. He is a good guy, a man who has his life in perfect order and is perfectly happy with his conservative lifestyle, yet lives in the same fear and isolation that Jennifer does. The story moves forward as Randall gives Jennifer a job. This leads to their bonding, and soon Jennifer develops feelings for Randall and attempts to delve into his secret past.
This critically-acclaimed comedy/drama, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is directed by Christine Lahti, the actress who won an Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short feature in 1996. The movie should see a limited release and might gain some momentum if it is able to generate Oscar buzz. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
