A French film about two unhappy people trying to find contentment and fulfillment through sex, Intimacy has caused quite a stir in Europe over its graphic sex scenes.

The film follows the lives of quiet desperation lived by Jay, a bar manager who has left his family, and Claire, a housewife and amateur actor who's cheating on her husband. Jay and Claire meet once a week for sex, hoping to find the happiness that is otherwise lacking in their existences. The sex scenes are used to illustrate just how empty this pair's lives are, and how neither seems able to break through the superficial to find what is important and meaningful.

Intimacy made its American debut at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and is scheduled for a limited release on October 19th. No word yet on what rating the film will receive, but even though the sex scenes are specifically not designed to titillate, it will likely be released without a rating if it is to remain intact. This could pose a problem in the marketing, because many newspapers won't accept ads for films that do not have a rating. Then again, many newspapers won't accept advertising for NC-17 movies, either, so marketing will be difficult. Most likely, the film will rely on word-of-mouth to survive on the art-house circuit.
