Crazy as Hell is ER cast member Eriq LaSalle's feature-film directorial debut on a movie with a screenplay that is based on the Jeremy Leven novel Satan. The film premiered at the Pan-African Film and Arts Festival and has been picked up for distribution by Artistic License.
The plot details the story of Ty Adams (Third Watch's Michael Beach), an unconventional psychiatrist whose non-medicinal approach toward treating patients has earned him some varying reactions. Some of his strongest critics claim he is an egoist, but in other circles, he is lauded as a hero. The doctor agrees to become the subject of a documentary that will study the effects of psychiatry on mental illness, and also the reverse, the effects of mental illness of psychiatry. All goes according to expectations until a new patient arrives, claiming to be Satan (LaSalle himself takes on this role). The psychiatrist and his subject undergo some intense therapy as the mysterious stranger manages to slowly work himself into the doctor's world, pushing them both toward a battle of survival.
Other familiar faces in the cast include Sinbad, Ronny Cox (The Agency) and the wonderful John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox on NBC's Scrubs). Thus far, the film has received fairly positive reviews and it looks to be heading for a fairly limited release in top markets. Time will tell if it allows LaSalle to make the permanent jump from television actor to film directing. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
