The movie is very loosely inspired by the real-life murder of actress and star of TV's My Sister Sam, Rebecca Schaeffer. At the time of her murder, she was engaged to this film's writer, Brad Silberling.
The film is set in the early 1970s, and focuses on the life of Joe Nast, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. His life was smooth sailing until his fiancée died unexpectedly. Her parents, played by Academy Award-winners Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon, take him in, since he's the only connection to their daughter. Soon he begins to fall in love with another woman, and he is torn between his duties to his former soon-to-be in-laws and his new love.
This film was picked up out of turnaround by Touchstone from Warner Bros., who in turn got it from DreamWorks. It has also gone through a couple title changes. The original title of the film was Baby's in Black, then it was changed to Goodbye, Hello before getting the current title. It looks like it has found a good home with a strong cast. The combination of Hoffman and Sarandon should prove to be a big box-office draw. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
July 26, 2002 This film has occupied nearly every weekend spot in September now and will open in selected theaters rather than going wide. However, given the positive reaction the trailer is receiving, it's entirely possible that a platform release is in the works. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
