One Hour Photo is one of three 2002 films in which Robin Williams takes on darker roles than usual. In March, he plays a former children's show host out to extract revenge against his replacement in Death to Smoochy, and he takes on the role of a murder suspect in Insomnia. In One Hour Photo, Williams portrays Seymour "Sy" Parris, a quiet, lonely technician at a local SavMart one-hour photo lab. Sy begins to build a fantasy life for himself as "Uncle Sy" to a family of regular customers as he idealizes them from their photos. Gradually, his obsession turns to stalking, and when Sy comes to understand that the family is not as perfect as he imagined them to be, he takes chilling steps to make things the way he believes they should be. Connie Nielsen (Gladiator) and Michael Vartan (Never Been Kissed) co-star as the mother and father who are the target of Sy's "affections". Also appearing are Gary Cole (The Brady Bunch Movie) and ER's Eriq La Salle. Mark Romanek, who is previously known for his work on music videos for artists such as Fiona Apple, Beck and Madonna, directed and wrote the screenplay. This film premiered at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival and is distributed by Fox Searchlight. It has already had its release date pushed back twice (first from September 28, 2001 to December of 2001, then from December to April of 2002) and its grim and arty feel may be better suited to a limited release. We'll have a better indication of how audiences will accept Williams as the heavy once Death to Smoochy hits theaters, which may make One Hour Photo a film to keep on radar.
