One of only two films to ever win three prizes at Cannes (Jury Grand Prize. Best Actor and Best Actress), The Piano Teacher is a French-language film adapted from Elfriede Jelinek's novel by the same name.
The film’s decidedly dark plot follows the slow self-destruction of Erika Kohut, a middle-aged piano teacher at the Vienna Music Conservatory. She has an odd love-hate relationship with her live-in mother, not to mention an obsession with red-light district peep shows and pornography. When one of Erika’s young students gets the notion that he ought to seduce her, their dark path allows her to throw her inhibitions completely away as the pair turns to sadism and masochism.
Isabelle Huppert has received quite a bit of attention for her portrayal of the repressed piano teacher, and will appear with Colin Firth, Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts in upcoming Merchant Ivory production Le Divorce. U.S. audiences will have a chance to see her for themselves as The Piano Teacher will have a limited run in New York with a number of other play dates scheduled around the country. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
