This Spanish movie marks the first time that one of the works of British horror writer Ramsey Campbell has been brought to the big screen. Former horror fanzine editor Jaume Balagueró has decided to make his directorial debut with this film.
The story is about a woman named Claudia Horts de Gifford (Emma Vilarasau) who is traumatized after police find the brutally-murdered body of her daughter, Angela. There has always been some doubt in the back of Claudia's mind about the identity of that body. Her thoughts begin to become reality when she receives a phone call from Angela...five years after her "death".
Claudia contacts the policeman that was originally assigned to the case and they try to locate the daughter. Angela manages to give directions to her location and also tells her mother that "they" only wanted it to look like she was dead. They soon uncover the evil doings of a cult that was formed in Nazi Germany.
This film has actually been out for a while and was released on DVD in Spain in 2000. It has won awards at several fantasy/horror film festivals. Many critics have compared the film style to that of Se7en. I think that's a pretty good endorsement. Check it out if it comes to a theater near you. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
