Is Hollywood the only place that can put together romantic comedies? Apparently not. The French are quite capable as well. French director Daniele Thompson co-wrote this film along with her son, Christopher.
The story sounds like the typical series of events that conspire to bring together an unlikely couple. In this case, big stars Juliette Binoche and Jean Reno play the destined couple. Rose (Binoche) is a troubled beautician who is running away from her abusive boyfriend Sergio (Sergi Lopez) for a promising new life in Mexico. Felix (Reno) is traveling from the U.S. to Germany to attend the funeral of his ex-girlfriend’s grandmother. Their paths cross in Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport in France.
The writer’s couldn’t have them just bump into each other, could they? Nope. A transit strike, computer glitches, and bad weather all work together to keep the two stuck in the airport and eventually have them sharing a hotel room. Are these the conditions that are necessary for two contrasting personalities to come together? Only time (and the script) will tell.
The film had its world premiere at the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival. Festival attendees locked to this film because of the two stars. Many audience members left satisfied. Because of the big names starring in this movie, it should make its way to select theaters across the nation soon. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
