The Anarchist Cookbook
Release Date:

You would think that a movie loosely based on the controversial book The Anarchist Cookbook, which provides recipes for activities such as making pipe bombs and illegal recreational drugs, couldn’t be a romantic comedy. Well, you’d be wrong. Writer/director Jordan Susman makes his feature film debut in both capacities with this film that takes a look at this counterculture movement.
The movie focuses its story on Puck (Devon Gummersall), a former resident of Plano, TX who has made the move to the big city and joined an anarchist community in Dallas. He likes hanging around with friends, including Karla the hedonist (Gina Phillips), Double D the not-so-bright guy (Steve Van Wormer), and Johnny Red the hippie (John Savage). We see their relationships and the comedic events in their lives. Everything is going fine in their lives, which involves committing mostly misdemeanors around town.
Their lives change one day when the menacing Johnny Black (Dylan Bruno) shows up. He wants to get the gang to turn their violence up a notch or two. Of course conflict ensues within the group as they try to decide for themselves which path they should take and who should be included.
The film had its world premiere in June 2002 at the Seattle International Film Festival where it received some accolades. However, this film will probably only get a very limited run in theaters. Make sure you get out right away if you want to catch it. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
