John Sayles returns with another of his large ensemble dramas, and what a cast he has assembled; perhaps you could call it his version of 8 Women. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Marcia Gay Harden, Daryl Hannah, Susan Lynch, Vanessa Martinez, Rita Moreno, Mary Steenburgen, and Lili Taylor star in this film about a group of American women who travel to a South American country to adopt babies. The six American women stay together in a hotel (run by Rita Moreno’s character) as they wait for the local bureaucracy to process their adoption papers before they can take home newborns from a nearby orphanage. The women confide in each other as the process stretches out over weeks.
As in other Sayles films, we can expect a combination of personal and political issues to be addressed. Sayles seems particularly interested in culture clash, and has focused on Latin American issues in particular before with the film Hombres Armados and the novel Los Gusanos. Though Sayles’ commercial profile hit its highest mark with Lone Star, he has continued to be one of the best storytellers working in film. He consistently attracts amazing casts, often filled with underappreciated actors, and the results are always compelling to watch.
