Intolerable Cruelty
Release Date:
October 10, 2003
Ah, those wacky Coen Brothers. The ever-eclectic creators of such unforgettable films as Fargo and Raising Arizona are back again with another stubbornly quirky offering.
Along for the ride are a couple of their most famous former collaborators, George Clooney and Billy Bob Thornton. Since they are the most popular writer/directors in Hollywood, the Coens were also able to pick up a couple of new A-list talents this outing. Recent Academy Award Winner Catherine Zeta-Jones and even more recently evil skeletal pirate Geoffrey Rush are also on board. Adding to the impressive mix are the always amusing Cedric the Entertainer and BOP fave Edward Herrmann.
The assembled talent will be participating in a matrimonial battle of the sexes. Clooney's character, Miles Massey, is a hotshot divorce attorney trying to get one of his most influential clients out of an airtight prenuptial agreement. The way he conspires to do this is by framing the man's wife, Marylin Rexroth (Zeta-Jones), thereby invalidating the terms of their contract.
When Massey succeeds in his nefarious scheme, Rexroth plots a course of revenge that is centered upon seducing and marrying the attorney. Once she has taken his heart, Marylin plans to help herself to his wallet. After she has his money, she plans to dump the now-useless man and move along to her next conquest. Somewhere along the way, though, Rexroth and Maasey's cynically mercenary metholodogy is replaced by a new sensation for each of them...love.
The Coen Brothers experienced early success in their careers with their first foray into the realm of romance with The Hudsucker Proxy. With similarly sardonic subject matter here, Intolerable Cruelty is poised to be another instant classic from the oddball duo. (David Mumpower/BOP)
