When someone as gifted as James Cameron places his faith solely on one person's shoulders, the actress must be a special talent. That is the knowledge Jessica Alba hangs her hat on these days now that the gifted director's first television production has failed to last beyond a second season.
While Dark Angel might be gone from the Fox lineup and North America's collective conscience, Alba herself remains a very desirable actress due to her combination of exquisite beauty and innate toughness. It is the latter gift upon which she will be heavily relying in the movie Honey.
Honey the movie is about Honey the dancer. She is a hard working young woman who dreams of directing music videos. Until that day comes, she is left to work two jobs as a music store salesperson and bartender to make ends meet. When she finds herself in position to succeed in the video industry, Honey can't believe her good luck.
This giddy joy doesn't last, though. Honey is propositioned by an evil producer: if she doesn't sleep with the man who has given her the job, he threatens to ruin Honey's career by blacklisting her. She decides to risk it, and finds herself having to start a new career.
As fate would have it, Honey's new career is more personally satisfying than her old one. She opens up an inner city dance studio and touches the lives of several young kids. Along the way, her determination is backed by the love of Chaz (Mekhi Phifer of ER and 8 Mile), who supports her in building the studio.
While many analysts are describing Honey as Glitter 2, I see it as a rather natural evolution on the themes of Save the Last Dance with just a bit of Center Stage thrown in. Alba's attempt to become the next Julia Stiles will be largely determined by which of those two films's box office is closer to Honey's final numbers. (David Mumpower/BOP)
