After a Bond Girl performance in Tomorrow Never Dies and a breakthrough success in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Michelle Yeoh is one of the most recognizable actresses out of Hong Kong. Her production company, Mythical Films, is responsible for this movie about a Chinese family of circus acrobats. Although it was released in China in 2002, the always-irritating Harvey Weinstein and Miramax have given this film the Hero/Shaolin Soccer treatment by delaying it multiple times.

The Touch is a bit different than those other two films, though. While Hero and Shaolin Soccer are Chinese-language movies with English subtitles, The Touch is almost entirely an English-language film. It even co-stars the British Ben Chaplin and Aussie Richard Roxburgh.

Yeo plays the acrobat Yin, who along with her younger brother Tong (Brandon Chang) is part of a family with a directive to guard an ancient treasure that a lama buried hundreds of years earlier. The pair must find the treasure before an evil antique collector named Karl (Roxburgh). Also joining the hunt is Yin's ex-boyfriend Eric (Chaplin), who just happens to still be deeply in love with her.

If it sounds a lot like Tomb Raider or Relic Hunter, that's because it is. The general reaction from those who have seen the film is that the story is fairly generic and not a little sloppy. Chances are, Miramax will continue to delay this one as they did the similarly-difficult The Accidental Spy, with the best potential possibly being a direct-to-video release. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
