Ever think about fleeing the life you currently lead? Maybe you’ve even thought about doing it in some unusual way. Any idea you’ve had will pale in comparison to the way Danny Deckchair does it. Director and screenwriter Jeff Balsmeyer makes his feature film debut in both capacities with this presentation.
The story is about Danny Morgan (Rhys Ifans) and how he made a drastic change in his life and got the nickname Danny Deckchair. Mr. Morgan is a cement truck driver and he ends up in a fight with his girlfriend (Justine Clarke). Because of the fight, he has to cancel a long-awaited vacation. This pushes him over the edge and he decides to get away from it all.
However, he doesn’t just hit the road in his car. He decides to tie a bunch of helium-filled balloons to his lawn chair (“deckchair” in Australia) and float away. The plan seems to be fine until a large storm blows his contraption out over the Outback. The media is in a frenzy about this guy and wonder about his disappearance. Meanwhile, our hero has landed near a small town named Clarence. He has decided to look at this as an opportunity for a fresh start in life and is going to make the most of it.
This movie was released in Australia at the end of July 2003 to mostly positive reviews. It has been making the rounds at various film festivals around the world and has been enjoyed by those audiences. It should make its way to a independent film venue near you in the early part of 2004. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
