Akerman is distractingly close to being a Cameran Diaz doppelganger, but Monaghan more than makes up for the movie's weaknesses. |
No, this is not a Shawn Michaels biopic. The Heartbreak Kid is a remake of the 1972 Neil Simon film of the same title. Originally a star vehicle for Jason Bateman directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, The Heartbreak Kid has since morphed into a reunion of the feature players from There's Something About Mary. Ben Stiller has replaced his friend and Dodgeball co-star as the main character while notorious gross-out directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly are now attached to direct.
The original film told the story of Lenny and Lila, a recently married couple honeymooning in Miami. While there, Lenny meets the statuesque blonde beauty Kelly and instantly realizes he has made a huge mistake. The woman of his dreams is this total stranger, not the lady with whom he so recently swore to love until death they do part. The remake looks to loosely cover the same ground. Lenny has been re-named Eddie and will be played by Stiller. Lila will be portrayed by Malin Akerman, Autumn from The Invasion, while Mission: Impossible III co-star Michelle Monaghan portrays the woman of Eddie's dreams, Kelly.
Given that There's Something about Mary earned $176 million domestically with $360 million in worldwide receipts, the reunion of Stiller with the Farrellys makes this one of the most marketable comedies on the 2007 schedule. (David Mumpower/BOP)
