I cannot in all sincerity say this is a good movie, but Monique's heart is in the right place. It scores higher than some due to its sunny disposition. |
It hasn't been that long ago that Mo'Nique headed up the cast for Hair Show, an indie film that bore a striking similarity in theme to Beauty Shop. Despite finding a niche as a fun supporting actress in films like Two Can Play That Game and Soul Plane, her efforts at toplining a film have proven to be somewhat less successful.
She's going to get another shot, though, as Fox Searchlight will release Phat Girls to an audience that will almost certainly give the film a fair amount of support. Mo'Nique will play Jazmin Biltmore, an aspiring fashion designer with a smart mouth. She's one of two frustrated plus-size women in the film who will struggle with their obsessions about their body image even as they try to find love and friendly acceptance in a world where skinny chicks rule. The girls are surprised and thrown off their game when each one of them manages to meet the man of her dreams. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
